Illegal Migration

The Blue Heart Campaign is an initiative of the United Nations Office on Drugs & Crime. Crime Stoppers Turks & Caicos is a proud supporter.

  • It is an awareness raising initiative to fight
human trafficking and its impact on society.
  • It seeks to encourage involvement and to
inspire action to help stop this crime.
  • It allows people to show solidarity with the victims
of human trafficking by wearing the Blue Heart.
  • The Blue Heart represents the sadness of trafficking victims, the cold-heartedness of the perpetrators and the commitment of the United Nations
    to fight this crime.

The challenge confronting the Turks & Caico is that our small multi island country with a population of 35,000 to 40,000 is near Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, with a population of 9 + million. Many Haitians attempt to find a better life but fall prey to criminal elements in Haiti who convince them to sell much if not all their property to sail in overcrowded, unseaworthy, sloops. Some survive the trip but many more perish at sea.

To bring attention to this Crime Stoppers Turks & Caicos presented a paper “Human Trafficking from Haiti-Impact on Turks & Caicos Islands and Beyond” to the Chief, Anti-Trafficking Section, United Nations Office on Drugs & Crime (www.unodc.org), at Crime Stoppers International Conference in November 2007. This lead to UNODC and UN.GIFT (Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking - www.ungift.org) organizational support for Caribbean Forum on Crime & Development to have been held in the Turks & Caicos Islands, 28 September – 2 October 2008. Planning was well underway when the Turks & Caicos Islands Government cancelled it, possibly for financial reasons.

In 2009 we partnered with Crime Stoppers Bahamas, Crime Stoppers Miami-Dade and the United States Coast Guard in a “Don’t Buy Death” campaign in Haiti. It consisted of posters and radio advertisements aimed at telling potential Haitian victims the truth to contradict the lies of criminal traffickers.
